Otsego County, from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860).  French's Gazetteer is considered a reliable source for New York State in the pre-Civil War time period, and many subsequent gazetteers borrowed heavily from this work.  Localities cited in the text include Burlington, Burlington Green, Burlington Flats, West Burlington, Butternuts, Gilbertsville, Cherry Valley, Salt Springsville, Decatur, Edmeston, Edmeston Center, West Edmeston, South Edmeston, East Edmeston, Exeter, Exeter Center, Schuylers Lake, West Exeter, Hartwick, Hartwick Seminary, South Hartwick, Toddsville, Clintonville, Laurens, Jacksonville, West Laurens, Maryland, Schenevus, Chaseville, Middlefield, Middlefield Center, Clarksville, Milford, Milford Center, Colliersville, Portlandville, Morris, Louisville, Maple Grove, New Lisbon, Garrattsville, Noblesville, New Lisbon Center, Stitsonville, Oneonta, West Oneonta, Oneonta Plains, Otego, Otsdawa, Center Brook, Otsego, Cooperstown, Fly Creek, Oaksville, Otsego Lake, Toddsville, Pittsfield, Plainfield, Unadilla Forks, Plainfield Center, Spooners Corners, Leonardsville, Richfield, Richfield Springs, Monticello, Mayflower, Brighton, Roseboom, South Valley, Pleasant Brook, Springfield, Springfield Center, East Springfield, Unadilla, Unadilla Center, Westford, Westville, Worcester, East Worcester, and South Worcester.  10+ pages, PDF format, download now for $2.50.

Otsego County, from French's Gazetteer (1860)

Historic Cherry Valley, by Hilda E. Streeter (undated, but post-1924).   Best known as the site of the Cherry Valley Massacre, Cherry Valley had other distinctions, including being the birthplace of a college fraternity.  Evidently dating from some point just subsequent to 1924, the thin volume is a travelers’ guidebook to the locale, providing a capsule history as well as photographs of historically important locations in the town and a map of the village.  Unlike most booklets of this type, this one thoughtfully provides a bibliography for further research should the reader want more information.  48+ pages, PDF format with photographs, download now for $4.50.

Otsego County chapter from Mather & Brockett's Geographical History of the State of New York (1848).  This book only predated French's Gazetteer by a dozen years, but the difference between the two books is remarkable.  Not all the difference can be attributed to the passage of time, but this is still essential information about the county and its history.  6++ pages, in PDF format, download now for $3.25.

Otsego County was separated from Montgomery County in 1791.  You may also want to consult our Montgomery County page for locations that may have been affected by this transaction.

Other counties were subsequently removed from Otsego County in whole or in part.  Please see our separate pages for the following counties: Delaware County and  Schoharie County.
