Rockland County in Mather & Brockett's Geographical History of the State of New York (1848). We're often moved to compare Mather & Brockett's 1848 treatment of New York State counties with that of French a dozen years later. Generally, French devotes a multiple of the number of pages that Mather & Brockett devoted to a county, but here is the exception: Mather & Brockett gave little Rockland County four full pages -- only slightly less than average for an upstate county, and (see below) French gave it the same number. In addition to those four pages, we also include Mather & Brockett's material on the land grants and patents underlying all New York State counties. 4++ pages, in PDF format, download now for $1.50.
The Rockland County chapter from French's Gazetteer of the State of New York (1860). Here is a look at Rockland County a bit over a decade after Mather & Brockett's treatment of the subject. The localities mentioned in this chapter in boldface type are: Clarkstown, Rockland Lake, New City, Nanuet, Clarksville, Dutch Factory, Haverstraw, Tompkins Cove, Garnerville, North Haverstraw, Thiells Corner, Montville, Caldwells Landing, Grassy Point, Orangetown, Nyack, Piermont, Tappantown, Rockland, Orange Mills, Middletown, Blauveltville, Ramapo, Sufferns, Sloatsburgh, Spring Valley, Mechanicsville, Furmanville, and Monsey Depot. At four pages, the chapter is very short but still an essential part of the record. 4+ pages, in PDF format, download now for $1.75.
