When the Westbrook Resident and Business Directory for 1888, by Emmons & Bonser was published, it was clear that the once rural Town of Westbrook had become centered in an industrial hub -- known as Saccarappa -- and a secondary hub -- Cumberland Mills.  Residents by 1888 were clearly concentrated in these two locales.  Indeed, there seem to be two of everything!  Lodges, libraries, you name it; there are two of them.

It is also evident from this book that Westbrook is closely tied to Portland itself, not just geographically, but in terms of suppliers and merchants of many kinds.  In fact, the "Index to Patrons" in the back of the volume lists as many patrons (i.e. advertisers) in Portland and Biddeford as it does in Saccarappa.

The Directory contains what directories of that time typically contained -- and what today is critical information for local and family historians and genealogists:  numerous ads, a business directory, locations of streets and roads, a residential directory providing names of heads of households as well as occupation and address, schools, churches, libraries, associations, and the rest.
